Central Banking During Times of Armed Conflict: A Private Members Executive Briefing
Any Central Bank which finds itself in a conflict situation faces singular circumstances. Situations depend on the causes of the conflict, the parties involved, how it affects the institutional set up in the country and how it plays out. This shapes the role the Central Bank plays and its relationship with the various players.
GIC Members are invited to a private College of Central Bankers Executive Briefing with speakers, Mustapha K. Nabli, Former Governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia, and Ajmal Ahmady, Senior Fellow at Harvard University and Former Governor of the Central Bank of Afghanistan. They’ll be joined in conversation with moderator, Michael McKee, International Economics and Policy Correspondent for Bloomberg Television and Radio.
Dr. Nabli will illustrate the role of the Central Bank using the case of the Libya conflict which has been ongoing for more than 10 years.
Dr. Ahmady will discuss the challenges faced, policies implemented, and events since August 15th of last year as Afghanistan’s central bank was responsible for maintaining macroeconomic stability in the midst of state collapse. In this challenging environment, the central bank was able to maintain inflation at low single digits, built a modern payments system, and prevented financial sector failures.

Senior Fellow at Harvard University and Former Governor of the Central Bank of AfghanistanAjmal Ahmady is a global leader whose career spans senior policy roles, asset management, economic development, fintech, and academia. He is now a Senior Fellow at Harvard, where he is conducting research related to central banking in emerging and frontier markets.
Jill Fornito
Executive Director, Global Interdependence CenterJill Fornito joined the Global Interdependence Center in 2008 as the assistant director with a broad scope of responsibilities including organizational and program management. In 2011, Jill assumed the role of director of operations, focusing mainly on the planning and execution of GIC’s domestic and international conferences. Jill was named the executive director in 2017 as she continues to oversee the daily operations of the GIC office, including development, financial administration, program coordination and communications. She is also the author of GIC’s Travel Blog.
