Event Detail

Fed Independence and the Divided U.S. Congress

The 50-50 split in the U.S. Congress has generated a 12-12 split on the Senate Banking Committee – and a stalemate in advancing 5 Board nominations, including Chair Powell. Join the Global Interdependence Center’s College of Central Bankers on March 24, 2022 as they discuss the realities and risks of political influence in selecting Federal Reserve Governors and others. Does this selection process influence Fed independence? What possible impacts on the scale and timing of future policy? Are there longer term consequences for US and global influence on monetary policy? Fiscal policy? Dollar supremacy? Market movements?

We’ll explore these questions and more with speakers, Jeff Lacker, Ph.D., Former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and Distinguished Professor of Economics at VCU School of Business, and College of Central Bankers Fellows, Charles Plosser, Ph.D., Former President & CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and Dennis Lockhart, Former President & CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. The program will be moderated by CCB Advisory Board Member, Michael McKee, International Economics and Politics Correspondent, Bloomberg Radio/TV, and will include remarks from CCB Chair, Peter Gold, Esq., Principal, TheGoldGroup LLC.

In advance of the webinar, we invite you to read Dr. Plosser’s recent paper, “Federal Reserve Independence: Is it Time for a New Treasury-Fed Accord?” which was published as a part of the Hoover Institution Economics Working Paper Series.
