War in Ukraine: the lessons of Thucydides
ARTICLE January 30, 2023Matthieu Bussiere recently published an article in September, 2022 based on a book written by Thucydides, an Athenian general and historian who fought during the war and wrote his memories afterward. Thucydides is often cited in the US for the “Thucydides trap”, but Bussière argues that a lot more can be learned from his writing, even 2,500 years after his book came out.

Matthieu Bussière is Director of the Directorate Economics and International and European Relations at the Banque de France. He was previously heading the International Macroeconomics Division in the same Directorate. Before joining the Banque de France in 2009 he worked at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Germany, and visited, for shorter periods, the Federal Reserve Board, the Bank of England, and the International Monetary Fund.
